The new smaller compatible replacement remote replaces the older discontinued garage door opener controls that use a fixed code of 9 or 12 binary switches. Matching the switches in the new remote to another working remote will set your code. When you do not have a working remote match the switches to your receiver on the motor unit hanging in the garage.
